How can you fit a square block into a round hole?
You can't. It's a physical impossibility. Yet our survey of Campus Event Programmers across the nation admitted to booking a speaker or entertainer that did NOT match their event theme, at least once in their career.
As you already know or may have even experienced, this particular mistake could completely ruin your event -- and your reputation.
In fact, 43.7% blamed the entire fiasco directly on the performer!
It wasn't their fault, and it's not yours either. You just may not have been properly educated on *how* to find the perfect speakers and entertainers to match your events.... until now.
As you begin to devour this career-saving article, you will learn five specific steps to take to ensure your speakers and entertainers are chosen to perfectly match the theme of your event, every time -- and without fail.
Have you ever heard the often-quoted statement, "If you fail to plan, you plan to fail." -- This little tidbit of information would seem to be common knowledge, especially in the event programming industry, however...
Have you ever taken the time to think about HOW you plan your events?
I mean, *really* taken the time to know every important aspect of your programming agenda?
You may think so right now, but as you continue reading you may begin to feel a little bit differently...
Here are some important questions you need to ask yourself before you plan ANY event -- this could save you some serious time, money and frustration later on when choosing your speaker or entertainer for the show...
Important Question #1: "What Type of Event Theme Am I Programming, and Why?"
This is always the very first question you should ask yourself before you attempt to plan ANY event. You should either take out a pen and paper, or use your computer's word processor to answer these questions. You could also use a tape recorder to record your questions and answers, which would allow your creativity to flow more freely...
Begin by asking yourself this question, and then start brainstorming all the different answers you can think of. It doesn't matter how many or how few answers you come up with, as long as you're making the attempt to get your creative juices flowing.
Really think of WHY you should program this particular event, because this will determine WHO you need to attract to the event, and HOW you'll go about attracting them.
Here's an example...
Q: "What Type of Event Theme Am I Programming?"
A: a magical, mystical night of enchantment and wonder
Q: Why Should I Choose This Event Theme?
A: because the students are getting bored of sumo wrestling and I want to give them something unusual, new and special
The reason you should do this will inevitably become crystal-clear to you as you read the next two questions...
Important Question #2: "Who Should I Attract to My Event and Why?"
Do exactly as before and ask yourself this question, then you and the team brainstorm a few answers. You always want more than one answer because you never know when your creativity will "kick in" and lead you to something you may not have thought of before...
Here's another example to get your creative juices flowing in the right direction...
Q: "Who Should I Attract to My Event?"
A: anyone who is interested and/or intrigued by the "unknown"... even skeptics are welcome to this event.
Q: "Why Should I Attract This Type of Audience?"
A: because I'm having an event centered around the magical, mystical and unknown, and skeptics are welcome because once they see the show I've programmed, they'll convert to believers and will want to attend my every event!
Now, once you know exactly what type of event-theme you're programming, along with what type of audience you're attracting, you'll want to find out...
Important Question #3:"Where Can I Find This Type of Audience for My Event?"
This question is particularly important because it's going to eventually lead you to certain places where you'll find the exact type of audience you're looking for.
For example:
Q: "Where Can I Find This Type of Audience?"
A: almost everyone I can think of would want to attend this event! we all have some level of fascination with "the unknown" -- it should be a breeze packing this one to the hilt!
So now, just by using a little brainstorming you've already come up with:
A) What type of event-theme you're planning.
B) What type of audience you're looking for who would be most interested in your event.
C) Where you can quickly find the perfect audience for your event.
And the best part... this only takes a few MINUTES!
See how easy, yet extremely effective this can be?
Ok, now this next question answers "the big one"...
Important Question #4: "Which Type of Entertainment Would Perfectly Match the Event Theme I Am Programming?"
Here's the icing on the cake. Do the exact same thing as before with your brainstorming and writing down as many possible answers as you can think of, and you might come up with something like this...
Q: "Which Type of Entertainment Would Perfectly Match My Event Theme?
A: in this case, it's a no-brainer. I'm going to need a magician, illusionist, ghost hunter or mind-reader to match my event theme.
"But which one do I choose?"
Well, let's see here. This is where creative brainstorming meets with logical, analytical thinking... So far (in this example) we have a magical, mystical event theme centered around "the unknown." -- So, let's do a little more brainstorming to find which of these types of entertainment would have the most impact on our chosen audience for this particular event...
Type of Event Theme - Magical, Mystical Evening Centered Around "The Unknown"
Well, let's go down the list...
Magician - They perform "sleight of hand" tricks... Interesting, but not "mystical" enough for this particular event
Illusionist - Again, a lot of sleight of hand, but with a little more "spark"... Still, we're looking for a truly magical, mystical, life-changing experience here -- and this one may not be right for the part
Ghost Hunter - Now we're cookin! -- Although, at second thought this may be too much "paranormal" and not enough "supernatural" for this event. We want some killer stuff to happen here, and although this would be cool, I think we can do a little better
Mind-Reader - By George, I think we may have a winner! -- Let's see, a mind-reader is mystical, magical, possesses skills totally attributed to "the unknown", and could quite possibly provide an unforgettable, life-changing experience for anyone at the event. This is it! We'll have a magical, mystical 'mind-reading' show!!!
See, that wasn't so hard, was it?
Of course now comes the fifth and final question...
Important Question #5: "Who Would Be The Best Entertainer for My Event?"
Now that you know just about everything you need to know for your killer event, your final step in the creative brainstorming process will be to find the speaker or entertainer who would be a perfect match for your event...
This is by far *the* most important part of the entire process, and could quite literally mean the difference between ultimate success and untimely failure for your event...
First, you'll want to do exactly as before and get those creative juices flowing with the brainstorming technique. Write down as many possible matches to your chosen theme as you can think of...
